Sutures 04 Introduction

This subsection has text and images from an interactive multimedia training program on basic
surgical skills called PrimeSkills in Surgery.
You can use this subsection on its own or follow the whole program (further details at the end of
this subsection).

At the beginning of this Section we assume that you are familiar with household cotton thread.

By the end of the Section you should be familiar with:

Monofilament and braided sutures.

Characteristics and strengths of different sizes of sutures of nylon, polypropylene, Vicryl and

silk.

Effects of knots on suture strength.

For details of individual needles and sutures, (there are hundreds of them), you should look in

the product guides from the manufacturers.

Just concentrate on the few needles and sutures in this program at first.
