You can learn and master a multitude of surgical skills in front of your computer before you go into the operating room.


Example 1. Basic Surgical Skills Training Program - Aptitude Test

Instructions

Use stitch scissors.
Start the computer clock. (Only on CD-ROM.)
Start cutting at the Start mark.
Continue cutting along the black track until you reach the Finish sign.
Stop the computer clock.
Record your time.
Add penalty times for :
Straying outside the black line. - 10 seconds per event.
Tearing the paper - 30 seconds per event.
Add up your total score.

Results:

Less than 7 minutes Good.
7 to 9 minutes Average.
More than 9 minutes Not so good.
You need more practice.
You may find the program and surgery too much for you.

Example 2 Basic Surgical Skills Training Program - Passing a needle through the tissues

When passing the needle, follow the curve of the needle to minimise tissue damage.

Example 3 Basic Laparoscopic Training Program - Laparoscopic reef knot/square knot

This diagram will enable you to learn the moves of laparoscopic knot tying before you try on a simulator or on a patient.

Print out this Instruction diagram and paste it onto the front of a ring binder.

Punch 2 holes in the lower border of the ring binder.

Pass a cord through the holes as in the diagram.

Follow the instructions on the diagram using laparoscopic needle holders.
